The KaziBantu Team, together with Dr Deborah Zeller from the University of Witwatersrand (WITS), developed a physical education (PE) short learning programme (SLP) that was accredited by the South African Council for Educators (SACE). This SLP was specially developed for teachers familiar with the PE challenges in under-resourced schools. The SLP aims to enhance teachers’ current PE pedagogical content knowledge and assist them further by making the KaziKidz teaching material freely available.
We recently hosted a 2-day workshop held Ubuntu Pathways Community Centre in Zwide, Gqeberha from 14-15 August 2023. The participants included schools from the Siyaphakama Zwide Schools Project: Isaac Booi, Garrett Primary, Esithembile, Daniels Primary and several lead teachers representing Melisizwe, Khanyisa, Alpha, Seagull, Caritas, C.W. Henrickse, Ben Sinuka, Gelvandale, Soutpan, and Astra schools were present, in accordance with the recommendations of Mrs. Phyllis Koeberg, the PE subject advisor for the Intermediate Phase. Subject advisor Mrs. Zuki Jama also attended the SLP.
We covered content about :
- The importance of physical activity and physical education.
- Understanding the intermediate and senior phase curriculum.
- Basics of motor skill development and fundamental movement skills.
- Games (including indigenous games), athletics, movement, fitness and outdoor and recreation in the curriculum.
- Classroom management and making equipment using upcycled household materials.
- Assessments of learners in the intermediate and senior phase (Gr 4-7).
We believe the workshops were meaningful and inspiring based on the positive participant feedback. By all accounts, this is a step in a positive direction.
